The Dexter Community Orchestra is seeking a Music Director who enjoys working with amateur musicians in the vibrant, culture-rich community of Dexter, Michigan.

The DCO is an IRS 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 2005, and is dedicated to enhancing the cultural experience of Dexter and the surrounding communities through the performance of classical music. The DCO offers qualified instrumentalists an opportunity to perform symphonic music, and seeks to foster music education for both youth and adults.

The DCO rehearses weekly on Wednesday evening from September through June, with a Friday dress rehearsal before Sunday concerts. The DCO typically gives three classical concerts each season, in addition to a December holiday concert (in collaboration with the Dexter High School Orchestras) and a pops concert in June. The spring classical concert features a competitively-selected youth soloist.

The DCO endeavors to present concerts which are challenging yet accessible to a wide audience of varying ages, musical tastes, and attention spans. Concert pieces generally come from the standard orchestra repertoire, but have included some premieres by contemporary composers. Recent performances have included:

• Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 40 and 41
• Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7
• Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun
• Dvorak: Symphonies Nos. 8 and 9
• Sibelius: Symphony No. 2
• Stravinsky: Firebird Suite
• Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos
• Prokofiev: Lt. Kije Suite
• Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5
• Creston: Invocation and Dance
• Vaughan Williams: Hodie

The Music Director is appointed by the DCO Board of Directors with the approval of a majority of orchestra members. The Music Director will be offered a contract for the period of one year (July through June) with the opportunity of renewal in January for the following year. An annual stipend is determined during the initial offer and renegotiated yearly during contract renewal.

The Music Director should possess solid conducting technique, good time management skills, and a willingness to work with amateur musicians of varying backgrounds and abilities.
